The 14 acres of Quinta do Rabaçal is situated in the natural reserve of the Mondego valley. Here you can walk undisturbed without meeting anyone, except perhaps the shepherd with his flock or someone on horseback. A place where foxes, badgers, otters, red squirrels and wild boar are common and birds such as eagles, kites, hoopoes and kingfishers are frequent visitors. Songbirds, butterflies, reptiles and amphibians also abound.

The quinta includes three beautiful, granite, self-catering cottages and a wooden chalet for rent. As a guest you can enjoy the pleasures of the riverside like swimming, (there are sandy riverbanks and private places were you can sunbathe and swim in peace) walking, fishing, free kayaking, swimming pool, and children’s playground.

And if you want to discover more about the unspoilt Beiras region of Portugal the quinta is well situated close to many attractions like the majestic Serra da Estrela mountains, the Bussaco forest with its ancient trees, Luso´s hot springs, the amazing beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, the historic city of Coïmbra and the lively markets in the local villages were time seems to have stood still.

About Us and Quinta do Rabaçal
According to the older people in the nearby village of Vila do Mato, Quinta do Rabaçal (the valley of the parsnips) was once a lively and prosperous place where the people sang on the fields as they worked the fertile land.
However, harder times hit the area and eventually the farm was abandoned and remained deserted until we arrived in 2002.

We are a dutch familie: Rein and Bien with our children Anne (1998) and Yannick (2000), together with our two dogs, two cats, chickens, ducks and a hamster called "grijsje".

We have restored the main granite farmhouse and used the original granite stones to rebuild the ox stable and oven house. The old oven is now working again and is used to make pizza & dishes.

Solar-power provides enough (220 Volt) energy for all the normal uses of us and our guests and there is a back-up generator for use when necessary. Water comes from a well situated above the accommodation, so no pumps are necessary as the houses are gravity fed. A borehole provides extra water during any summer shortages.

Heating in wintertime is provided by wood burning stoves, with almost all the fuel being harvested from the quinta.

Vegetables come from the organic garden and eggs are provided by our free range chickens and ducks. Potatoes are delivered by the local shepherd in exchange for grazing his sheep on the quinta's pasture.

Now a phone line and a partly paved, partly forest track is all that connects us with the rest of the world.

We wash dishes, clean the houses, and do the laundry only with organic products, which are available in the houses. We live in a protected area and our starting point is that our guests respect nature.

All the houses have their own kitchen.
Dogs are welcome, but please book in advance.

Home-produced meals available (inc. vegetarian or vegan).

Quinta das Abelhas offers you a warm family welcome on a beautiful but basic smallholding in the green heart of Portugal, with breath-taking views of two mountain ranges, the Serra da Estrela (highest in Portugal) and the Serra de Acor.

There is plenty to do on the quinta, there are ducks, geese, chickens, dogs, cats, and horses to play with and you are welcome to join in with all farm activities such as wine-making, olive harvesting (in season), helping in the gardens and feeding the animals, etc.

Enjoy lovely walks through the valley and forests: the River Mondego for swimming and fishing, and the village with shops, bars and a restaurant, are just 15 mins walk. One person at a time is able to go for a guided ride on Daan, who is suitable for all ages and abilities, along country tracks with an optional picnic lunch.

You can visit the local markets at Tabua (Sunday morning) and Arganil (Thursday morning); one of the many places of interest in the area such as Coimbra, a historic university city; Piodao, a traditional mountain village; one of the nearby river beaches; go to the beach at Figueira da Foz; skiing in the Serra da Estrela; or simply stay on the quinta and relax, listening to the gentle sound of the sheep bells as the shepherd passes through to graze his herd.

Water for drinking, cooking and washing comes from the well, and we have a brick-built twin chamber compost toilet, with wood-fired or solar heated shower.
We also have an outdoor bath, heated by starting a wood fire under it. Unfortunately due to fire risk this is not usable from May 1st to September.

Our traditional mongolian hand-painted yurt (ger) is a magic space in which to stay. It has a double bed, 2 single bed seats (kids seem to love them), and its own electricity supply. Near the yurt there is a simple gravity fed, sun heated shower for visitors use. The compost toilet building also has a solar shower, heated by a woodfired boiler for the cloudy days.

Alternatively, you can pitch your tent under the shade of an olive tree on one of our secluded terraces, sheltered by grape vines.

The Yurt and camping area is seperate from the rest of the farm. A peaceful secluded corner, with its own campers kitchen (in a small caravan), solar shower and water tank for refreshing dips on those hot days!

Quinta da Pedra Alta http://www.expatsportugalrentals.com/index.php?action=listingview&listingID=84 ODQtMjAxMi0wMi0wNyAxOToxOTozOQ== 07/02/2012 thumb_84_77_1.jpgFull Description: Located in the midst of breathtaking nature, at the foot of the Serra da Estrela, the upper region of Portugal, the Quinta da Pedra Alta is an ideal starting point for a number of activities.

The middle region of Portugal is regarded to be one of the most beautiful regions for walking-tours. The landscape is adventurous and authentic. The summits of the Serra reach to almost 2000 meters. The slopes will offer you a variety of rugged nature, green valleys and authentic agriculture. If you are interested in cultural activities the alleys and little streets of the ancient towns of the Beira Interior, often leading to an old castle, will offer you everything you desire. Apart from walking-tours, tours on horseback along rivers and through valleys, and canoeing on the beautiful Mondego river are exciting possibilities, and for the real daredevils amongst you mountaineering or delta flying! Apart from all this the area is very well suited for motor-cycling. As you can see, there is enough to do for everybody. If you are in for a tranquil intermezzo you can visit Coimbra, one of the oldest and most beautiful university cities of Europe, at less then an hour from the Quinta. Take a walk through its narrow alleys, visit a Tascas (a sort of Portuguese pub), listen to the famous Fado of Coimbra or the serenades given by the local students. Enjoy the ancient architecture and mingle amongst the Portuguese! If you are longing for the southern sun, with the sound of the Atlantic at the background, the bathing resorts of the Beira, Figueira da Foz and Aveiro, will offer you everything you are looking for. The Quinta da Pedra Alta is a farm of over 200 years old, and recently has been completely renovated. It's mixture of authentic details and modern comfort make it a warm and unique place to be. By using natural materials like wood and stone, and by using natural colours, the Quinta is completely in harmony with its surroundings. The Quinta is divided between a main house and a side house, both interconnected however by a sunny terrace. The main house has five spacious and well lit rooms, two of which have their own balcony. For its two bathrooms we have chosen for a combination of authentic details, combined with modern equipment. The spacious and cozy kitchen will give you the opportunity to prepare your own meals, which you can enjoy at the terrace of the living room. Later in the evening, when it is getting a bit chilly, you can continue in this living room which has a fireplace. The side house consists of two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The cosy living room with adjoining kitchen is the finishing touch. If you are in for a short walk, the vineyards and olive yards, surrounded by pine forest, provide ample opportunity. To enjoy the peace and quiet with your family, or to have great fun with friends: we have the perfect place for you!
