GENERAL
Reception is found on the ground floor at the far end of the building. Reception is open between 08:00am and 12:00noon, Monday to Friday.

Check-in is between 14:00 and 18:00, although later check-in can be arranged in advance. For early arrivals, cases can be left at the hotel until check-in. Check-out is no later than 10:30am. For late departures, cases can be left with the hotel. Preferred check-in day is Saturday, although check-in days are flexible.

Where it is included in the rate or organised as an optional extra, a continental breakfast is served in the ground floor breakfast room. This is found opposite reception. Breakfast is served between 8am and 11am, Sunday to Saturday.

The first floor of the hotel has a seating area, and there is a lounge on top floor of the hotel. These floors are accessed by a central staircase.

Pets are not generally allowed.

Smoking is prohibited inside the hotel, bedrooms and apartments.
Smoking is allowed on the balconies and the coffee shop patio.

Ideal for anyone wishing to "try Portugal before they buy", this renovated farmhouse with its productive, organic fruit and vegetable garden offers a few home comforts to make the transition from the UK "rat race" a little easier with an internet connection and UK TV via satellite. It is also close to the town of Carregal do Sal with all necessary amenities such as schools, supermarkets, health centre and a range of independent shops and cafes.
However, you can erase the indelible image of a villa, with pool, by a sundrenched Algarve beach. The property we have to offer is nowhere near the Algarve, and is about 3 hours North Of Lisbon and 2 hours South of Porto (time to get the Atlas out). It does not have a pool (although there is a municipal pool in Carregal, and countless River Beaches within a short drive) and is a good hour and a quarter from the nearest coastal beach. Instead, we can offer a quiet idyll on the edge of a small, friendly village and otherwise surrounded by fields and forest. In place of a pool, it boasts a thriving kitchen garden, with an abundance of different fruit trees. Far from a Mediterranean outlook, the vista is of Portugals highest point, the Serra De Estrela, where you can ski during the winter months.

It is, by no means, a luxury palace, and is, to a certain extent, still a work in progress with 2 barns still waiting to be developed, but otherwise, is a living breathing family home (with a cat.........if required!).

The property itself consists of an old farm building that has been renovated alongside a more recent extension. Mains electricity (not always standard in Portugal) is connected, as are mains water and sewerage. It also has telephone and internet connection and has hot water and cooking powered by bottled gas (standard in most of Portugal). The property has no central heating (no, you won't expire due to hyperthermia........honest.), and the ground floor area is heated in the mild winters by a wood burning stove. It also boasts a satellite tv set up. The ground floor of the house is made up of one large, open plan room that serves as lounge/dining room/study plus a large kitchen with a small utility room. Upstairs, there are 3 double bedrooms (one en-suite) and a family bathroom.

The village itself is on the edge of a forest, with drive-able/cycle-able/walk-able tracks that lead down to the Carp-filled (yes, Carp and not an anagram). River Mondego, about 2 miles from the house.

The house will be let, furnished, to include tv, white goods and all that is required to maintain the garden. It's all included, even the 2 kitchen sinks.

All in all, the place does have plenty of home comforts, but also includes an element of 'life as it used to be' in certain respects. The garden, although rewarding, does require effort to maintain, and we would expect it to be maintained reasonably.

We would suggest that it may not suit people who would aspire to a gin-soaked ex-pat lifestyle for a year, and would describe it as being perfect for those who would desire an element of self-sufficiency alongside a desire to explore and enjoy a foreign culture.

Ideally, it would suit somebody looking :

-for some sort of 'artistic' retreat for a period.

-to explore a foreign culture, including a new language, without making a permanant commitment.

-to settle in Portugal, but wanting a 'try the country before you buy' sort of arrangement.

-to escape the rat race.....to a large extent.

-to grow their own and live in an environment largely reminiscent of times past.
